Importance of emotional well being of youth

What is emotional well being?

The phrase “emotional well-being” typically brings up pleasant associations such as excitement, happiness, love, and acceptance. However, how we handle the unpleasant feelings we experience is actually the most significant indicator of our emotional well-being
According to Psychology Today, the definition of emotional well-being is “the ability to practice stress-management techniques, be resilient, and generate the emotions that lead to good feelings.”

For starters, it’s not the same thing as mental health. While the two terms are often used interchangeably, emotional health “focuses on being in tune with our emotions, vulnerability, and authenticity,” says licensed psychologist Juli Fraga, PsyD.
Keep in mind that having good emotional health doesn’t mean you’re always happy or free from negative emotions. It’s about having the skills and resources to manage the ups and downs of day-to-day life.

Ways to improve emotional well being of youth

1.Learn how to address stress properly:

Yoga, walking/exercising, deep breathing, meditation, and connecting with friends are among many healthy and comforting stress-relief techniques.

2.Build your emotional intelligence

Emotional intelligence is your ability to recognize, understand and use your emotions in a positive way to cope with stress and help manage relationships/communicate effectively in times of conflict.

3. Consider keeping a good diary

Many things can affect our mood, from eating something that causes a blood sugar spike to seeing something that triggers a specific emotional response. As a result of a food diary, collecting information with regularity over time can allow for patterns to emerge which can help you change certain behaviors and/or anticipate your emotional responses.

Children’s emotional wellbeing is just as important as their physical health. Good mental health helps them develop the resilience to cope with whatever life throws at them and grow into well-rounded, healthy adults.
Things that can help keep children and young people mentally well include:

Being in good physical health, eating a balanced diet and getting regular exercise
Having time and freedom to play, indoors and outdoors
Being part of a family that gets along well most of the time
Going to a school that looks after the wellbeing of all its pupils
Taking part in local activities.

Organisation that help youth to develop emotional well being

Barnardo's protects and supports the UK’s most vulnerable children. They provide a range of services to help and support children, young people, parents and carers.

CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) runs a free, confidential helpline and webchat service offering help and advice to anyone feeling down or in need of support.

ChildLine is a free, confidential service where children can talk about any issue they’re going through. You can call their helpline or use their webchat to speak to a trained counsellor.

The Children’s Society supports children going through serious life challenges. They run services and campaigns to make children’s lives better.

Treatment given to youth to help them to develop good emotional wellness

Treatment for children and young people often involves talking through the problem in order to work out the best way to tackle it. For young children, this may be done through play. They may be referred to a specialist such as a counsellor who is trained to help them explore their feelings and behaviour.

There is a lot of evidence that talking therapies can be effective for children and young people, but medication may also help in some cases. Children need to be assessed by a specialist before they are prescribed any medication.

The professionals supporting a child will keep information about them and their family confidential. Young people can seek help on their own, either by ringing a helpline or by approaching a professional directly, but will usually need a parent’s consent for medical care if they’re under 16.

Conclusion

Attributes of emotional wellbeing in youth include overall positive emotions, positive self-esteem, and resilience. Antecedents are safe and stable nurturing relationships; family and social connectedness, hope, and positive body-image. The consequences of emotional wellbeing in youth include self-efficacy, self-actualization, the presence of positive health behaviors, and the absence of high-risk behaviors.
